Fitbit Inc (NYSE:FIT) has announced that it has been selected by the National Institutes OF Health (NIH) as the first wearable manufacturer to participate in the Precision Medicine Research program.
The research program which is known as All Of Us plans to sign up more than 1 million people to participate towards accelerating research that could help improve disease prevention and treatment through individual attributes. The program was launched in 2015 and it plans to use roughly 10,000 Fitbit Alta HR™ and Fitbit Charge 2™ devices provided by Fitbit as part of the selection. The devices will be handed over to some of the participant’s s part of the project which is being run by the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI).
The research study will run for one year and this period of time will allow researchers to collect health data that will allow them to come up with recommendations on how the Fitbit devices can be integrated into the All Of Us program. The data from the study will also provide an opportunity for researchers to evaluate and determine the relationship between health indicators such as sleep and heart rate and the health outcomes recorded using the Fitbit devices.
“As part of the global shift towards precision medicine, wearable data has the potential to inform highly personalized healthcare. Through this historic initiative, we will be able to see the role that Fitbit data can play on the path to better understanding how individualization can help to prevent and treat disease,” stated Adam Pellegrini, the general manager of Health Solutions at Fitbit.
Fitbit’s devices are ideal for the research program because they offer easy pairing with devices that run on the two major smartphone operating systems. Additionally, Fitbit trackers are the most commonly used health and fitness trackers according to a report by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). Fitbit devices have so far been used in more than 470 research studies meaning they are highly preferred by researchers. This means the devices are considered reliable and thus the reason behind the selection of the company in yet another study.
Fitbit stock closed the latest trading session on Wednesday at $5.88.
